Crocodile Information
Australia has 2 species of crocodile, the saltwater or estuarine crocodile, also known as 'salties' by Aussies. The other is the Freshwater or Johnstone's Crocodile, also known as 'freshies' by Aussies.
The salties have been around for over 240 million years, during the time of the dinosaurs, and are extremely dangerous animals.
They can grow up to 5 metres long and have been known to weigh around 1,000 kilograms! Baby saltwater crocs only weigh around 60 grams when hatched.
Freshies are fairly shy, unlike their larger salty cousins, and will bite if they feel threatened. The freshwater crocs are found in brackish and freshwater systems including rivers, creeks, billabongs, swamps, etc., and grow to around 3 metres in length.
